Classic Vinyl – Steely Dan, Really, Steely Dan

Friday, August 6, 2010 21:19

When you think of the band Steely Dan, what comes to mind? I end up thinking this…this band is strange.  Given their track record of only one tour during an era then other bands were visiting almost every major metropolitan city non-stop.  Then, in the last fifteen years or so, they picked up the pace.  it seems like just about everybody played for them (as ‘them’ refers to two guys from Jersey after the second album) at one point or another and they never receive too much attention. They’ve toured quite a bit in the past 15 years – worldwide at that. Maybe it’s because their lyrics make obscure and weird references to people, places and things.

Velvet Underground – Heroin

Friday, July 2, 2010 11:10

One of my all time favorite college bar songs on the nights we would just chill drinkin beer and partying hard…calming with a little pickup in the middle, then back to relaxing. Velvet Underground is great. Lou Reed steered this band in a direction that was relevent to the times. He lived his songs.

Silversun Pickups – Panic Switch

Going out on a limb here…I like SSPU’s. The band’s sound, often encompassing multiple overdubs of distorted guitars, is frequently compared to that of The Smashing Pumpkins. Meanwhile the band members often compare their style to others groups like My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, the Velvet Underground.

Cake is always a great listen for any scenario.  Never There is a great tune to work to, drive to, party to, whateva.  This song should be on your playlist regardless of the mix.  Without a doubt one iconic song…thoughts?

Speed rap meets melodic flows…with a touch of anger and spite. Enjoy this one, make sure the kids aren’t around though. Busta has been doing it right for years and years, he’s a favorite fo sho. This was also made into a remix by Twista.

Def Tones – Diamond Eyes

This band has always been fearless in the way they produced music. The new album is very impressive. Some critics are saying that it is much better than the Saturday Night Wrist.

I’ve taken a quick listen to all the tracks and found only a couple that I wasn’t too fond of, however, after a few more listens I’m sure I’m sure I will sway myself.

I’d recommend picking this one up.

From time-to-time I still like to crank some classic hard rock. This isn’t the big hair band crap from the 80’s, it’s the cuts that burn through your skin with razor sharp guitar riffs, speed induced drums, and head banging lyrics.
